Overcoming Panic Attacks


I have been suffering Panic attacks for some time.  Over the last few months I have been on this journey to help with my Anxiety and Panic Attacks. I have begun to study various tutorials, DVDs and even an eBook. One course that I found very helpful was Panic Away. This course was not perfect, but was most helpful and I learnt a lot in managing my Anxiety by watching and listening.

Overcoming Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are periods of intense anxiousness when we are uneasy, uncertain or apprehensive about a situation or an event that will happen in our lives. We feel concerned and worried even distressed, nervous and tense. What triggers a panic attack is not obvious. They can strike at all kinds of times and stop you from living a normal and active life. But overcoming panic attacks or stopping them from becoming full blown is entirely possible.

 

The American Psychological Association reports that a panic attack can last anything from a few seconds to 30 minuets. They sometimes form a series of episodes lasting extending periods.

They seem to be linked to Agoraphobia and the fear of the unknown, can’t get out of a bad situation, feel trapped unable to escape.

 

It sometimes appears they are random, but something built into our bodily system kicks in when we are faced with a situation we are not sure of. The adrenaline starts to flow, which is the body’s natural aid in the defence against harm. Anyone who as experienced a panic attack will tell you, it is one of the most frightening, uncomfortable and upsetting experiences of their life.

 

People are effected differently some sufferers get a sense of going crazy, some even a fear of dying or having a heart attack. Most feel faint and nauseated; suffer from heavy breathing and a sense of losing control. There is a strong feeling to run away, escape the place or situation where the attack came on. The body’s system to fight or flight.

 

Shyness plays its part, people with low self esteem and lack self confidence often suffer anxiety and fear in certain situations.

 

Other more common symptoms are a shortness of breath, chest pain and heart palpitations, (hence the feeling of having a heart attack). Feeling sick and dizzy, sweating and light-headedness, also a tingling sensation.


Some self help methods such as proper breathing and relaxing help a great deal.

Practice slow and deep breathing filling and emptying your lungs, counting your breaths to 5, then restarting again or repeating a soothing word to help relax.

 

Simple life changes can help, cut down on caffeine, take up yoga. By learning to relax you are helping to control your mind which helps you to take charge and over come panic attacks.

 

In conclusion, there are a number of ways in which you can help yourself to combat and overcome panic attacks, also help with shyness and help build self confidence.

Learn to relax; Techniques in Relaxation can help to control the mind in bad situations.

Meditation or self-Hypnosis can play its part in helping control the mind. May be taking up Yoga classes to help with relaxation. Try to develop good breathing techniques. learn how to deal with and overcome shyness also help to build your self confidence.

 

Diet also plays its part in making you susceptible to anxiety. Caffeine and Nicotine are stimulants, so should be used in moderation. To much salt on the other hand plays havoc with the normal function of your nervous system, so try and cut down on salt intake.
